SEVEN
by Zachary Summers ’22
On October 22nd, Rudder Theatre found itself home to a one-of-a-kind program exploring the lives of seven women around the world. Hosted by MSC OPAS, MSC Leland T. and Jessie W. L.T. Jordan Institute for International Awareness and the International Student Association, the documentary produced by L.A. Theatre Works, focuses on adversity. SEVEN compellingly tells the stories of seven women who have fought for the recognition and enforcement of women’s rights. While these women all faced individual challenges, the common thread of their struggles was felt in their performance. The unique documentary play style of the piece wove together the words of each woman representing Russia, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Northern Ireland. Their words came together as a unified example of humanity, in struggle and triumph.
Being hosted by these three organizations allowed for the opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of arts as well as our international population. This program allowed viewers to develop a broader understanding of humanity and specifically the struggles faced by women across the globe. In addition to this, attendees were able to see how standing up for rights and equality begins humbly, but can become a source of strength for others.
