When in Uncharted Waters

The COVID-19 epidemic has affected modern society in countless ways, bringing many parts of daily life to a halt and placing obstacles in front of others. However, this situation has also provided an opportunity for MSC committees to impact others. MSC Freshmen in Service and Hosting (MSC FISH) has remained committed to their mission of service through a program called Afternoons at the Aquarium to provide entertainment, inspiration, and company to grade school children through the online medium of Zoom.
Afternoons at the Aquarium came to life shortly after A&M and public schools moved away from their physical format. This new model left committee members searching for ways to continue serving while children found themselves without the stimulation of school each day. MSC FISH members created this new virtual service project in less than two weeks and began hosting video calls on weekday afternoons to help children adjust to their new circumstances with crafts, exercises, and books. Afternoons at the Aquarium also gave parents a short reprieve from being a full-time parent/teacher/employee while keeping children engaged in fun and educational activities.
This program provided a unique experience to students offering lessons focused on problem-solving, taking initiative, and being flexible. Members were able to come together not only to address a relevant issue but also to overcome an unexpected obstacle. In the end, these Aggies loved their afternoons at the aquarium even more than those they served.
